‘Last week I said the third goal summed up the performance… well press repeat!

Thankfully I didn’t have to witness this in person this week and I feel for all the travelling fans.

A carbon copy of last weekend and a disappointing way to go into the international break.

Some players definitely need a rest (but some of them are going off to play even more games!).

Here’s hoping a refreshed group of players put on an improved performance when we meet back at home against Man City.’

Billy Miller:

‘Rarely have I greeted an international break with such enthusiasm.

Don’t even know where to start with that.

Just as abysmal as the West Ham showing.

Should have never been a penalty but I think we got away with the first one.

I was regularly saying last season that we had the best midfield three in the Premier League but they have been miles off it for much of this campaign.

Hardly anyone comes out of this encounter with any credit.

Ah well, it’s only Man City up next.’

GToon:

‘I said to my son at half-time that they stood a chance while we have Mr Punch in goal and so it proved.

There’s a few individuals who were absolutely shocking today but Eddie keeps picking them.

Sandro was a mile off the pace from the first minute but Eddie starts him despite him obviously not being 100%.

BDB was getting nowhere against their winger but Hall is made to warm the bench.

Nick got nothing from that game but we still have to play 433.

Watching this team this season has been a pretty miserable experience despite a large outlay to improve us.

There isn’t a team in that league I think we are capable of beating.

That’s on Eddie. Lose at the SOS and I think it’s time to consider if the manager is getting enough from a very talented group of players.’

Matt Busby said…:

‘That was awful. Again.

But games turn on big moments and the penalty/sending off was an absolute disgrace.

I’m not saying we wouldn’t have still ended up losing, but going from 1-1 and still in the game, to down to ten men and 2-1 behind sealed our fate.

Too many sub-optimal performances today.

Botman with a hat-trick of contributions to their three goals being the pick of them.’

David Punton:

‘A shocking display which heaps pressure on the manager and puts us on the brink of a relegation battle.

It’s capital punishment once again in London. We are better than this and yet the league form is atrocious.

West Ham and now this weekend Brentford coming from behind to see us off 3-1.

Eddie Howe has to think about changes as the same team and same tactics again gets the same outcome.

All after taking the lead.

Europe may well be blighting us, given the scale of the graft needed for the champions league, but the manger is doing himself no favours.

Today felt like one of them under Alan Pardew – and that’s a bad sign.’

Tony Mallabar:

‘Last season I was very critical of nice guy Eddie.

Today we were beaten by the better team.

I am now sitting on the coach home looking forward to a six hour journey home and you know what, I’d do it all again tomorrow supporting my beloved Newcastle United.

Other folk will comment more on this gutting defeat.’

Simon Ritter:

‘Groundhog Day at the GTech.

We scored with the best move of the first half but the danger signs were flashing red long before yet another Brentford long throw undid us.

Botman reached the ball before Pope, who was trying to punch it clear. The centre-half, who looked laboured all afternoon, headed on to Schade, who couldn’t miss.

Burn, who struggled to contain Ouattara from the start, avoided conceding a penalty once but not twice.

When he returns from suspension, Hall will be challenging for the left-back berth. Ironically, Ouattara would still be at Bournemouth if we had not bought Wissa.

The final goal, just as at West Ham last week, did no more than make the result an accurate reflection of the match.

The replacement of Tonali, Barnes and Murphy by Willock, Elanga and Hall gave us fresh legs but little in the way of fresh ideas.

We look jaded, lacklustre, slow in midfield and at the back.

With the honourable exception of Thiaw and, to an extent Barnes, none of our players was at his best.’

Mark Jankowski:

‘Newcastle travelled to the capital again to take on Brentford this weekend, looking to put right the disappointment of West Ham last week.

After a low-quality performance from both sides during the first half, Newcastle were in front.

Harvey Barnes’s assured finish in what was the only real chance for both sides in the first half.

Unfortunately, an early booking for Dan Burn in the second half and an absolutely incomprehensible decision from Eddie Howe not to substitute him, led to Newcastle coming under increasing pressure.

Inevitably we succumbed to the weaknesses down our left-hand side with Brentford running out easy winners.

Newcastle desperately need to change their approach away from home and desperately need to get a different solution down the left-hand side.

As valuable as Dan Burn is to the squad, he’s too easy of a target for pacey wingers and Howe should recognise this earlier.’

Jamie Smith:

‘It’s been a brilliant four years under Eddie Howe but today has been another trip to forget and the manager needs to take responsibility.

Dan Burn, struggling all game against pace, on a booking and extremely lucky not to give a penalty away, should have been withdrawn for the lively Lewis Hall a good ten minutes before the red card/penalty combination that cost the game.

The league table is horrible reading going into the break.

Hopefully a reboot akin to last year’s defeat at this ground is upon us as returning players maybe give some cause for optimism.

Gonna be a glum international break though.’
