The two teams exchanged four goals in the space of 24 second-half minutes, which left the German giants needing to net once more to take the tie to extra time — a goal which never arrived.

Hosts Inter led 2-1 from last week’s first leg in Bavaria, but it was Bayern who took the lead at San Siro as Harry Kane fired through Federico Dimarco’s legs and into the far corner for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Inter’s leveller on the night arrived just six minutes later, with Lautaro Martinez, the Inter captain, on hand to smack an instinctive low volley into the net from a corner.

Three minutes later, the home side edged 4-2 ahead on aggregate as Benjamin Pavard netted his first goal for Inter by hammering a header from a corner past goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, standing in for the injured Manuel Neuer.

Bayern were given hope when Eric Dier’s header back across goal looped over Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer and all the way in from a tight angle, cutting the deficit to just one goal and making for a tense final 14 minutes plus stoppage time.

Kane, Thomas Muller and substitute Serge Gnabry all missed late chances to take the tie to extra-time, as Inter held on to knock Bundesliga leaders Bayern out and set up a blockbuster semi-final against Barcelona.
