The first hurdle has been passed for Inter and Milan to purchase the land around San Siro, with only one vote against the €200m sale.

It was confirmed on Tuesday by Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala that the two clubs had agreed the sale of the land, which includes the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

This now has to be approved by the City Council, and the first hurdle was passed this afternoon with the approval of one committee.

It had only one vote against the sale, from the Green Party counsellor Elena Grandi.

Now it will pass on to another commission starting from Friday and should get a final vote next week.

The sale must be approved by the end of September so that Inter and Milan can begin the project to build a new stadium in what is currently the car park of the Stadio Meazza.

There is a specific deadline of November 10, 2025, which is when the current stadium will formally be registered as a monument of historic importance.

It marks 70 years since the second tier was built, which would make it extremely difficult for the clubs to get approval to demolish or even restructure that part of the stadium.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini warned the project has not been given the all-clear yet.

“Someone wasted five years of time and a billion in investments, but right now we don’t know much about the project, and it would be wrong to vote with eyes closed during a moment of investigations into construction. If there is not total transparency, I think it is right not to vote on anything.

“The original project included work to increase social benefits to the underserved neighbourhoods on the city outskirts. I feel bad for the people of Milan.”
