The post-match fallout from Napoli’s dramatic 3-1 victory over Inter immediately spilled from the pitch into the press room, igniting a classic Italian football war of words. The conflict was sparked by Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta’s furious critique of the officiating, particularly the controversial first-half penalty awarded to Giovanni Di Lorenzo, which allowed Napoli to take the lead.
Marotta was visibly frustrated, calling out the inconsistency in refereeing. He lamented the award of a “little penalty” (rigorino), suggesting it went against the spirit of a past directive from AIA Chief Gianluca Rocchi. He told reporters, “Rocchi has said ‘enough with the little penalties’ many times. We are looking for clarity once and for all. The episode created bitterness and anger, the conditioning was there.”
Marotta’s decision to speak out, however, drew the immediate and scornful ire of Napoli coach Antonio Conte. The former Inter Scudetto winner scornfully turned the attack back on the Inter hierarchy’s choice of spokesperson, viewing the complaint as a weak excuse unworthy of a top club.
Conte launched a stunning personal shot, stating, “The difference between Napoli and Inter is that they send Marotta or the other directors, while here I come. Great teams must not create alibis; I would not have allowed my directors to do so.” The Napoli boss suggested Marotta’s intervention “diminishes” the Inter coach, calling the action an inappropriate “defense of officialdom.”
Inter coach Christian Chivu was then tasked with defending the club in the face of Conte’s attack. Chivu avoided escalating the drama, choosing instead to defend the right of the club’s leadership to speak out while stressing the players’ need to stay focused.
He told the press, via TMW: “The club has the right to do what is right to do. As a coach, I will never complain, I will maintain this on-field approach until the end. I have to transmit values to my players, who must only think about playing.”
The tense three-way public exchange has ensured the focus remains fixed on the furious debate over refereeing consistency and club conduct, cementing the rivalry as one of the most heated in the league.
