Inter manager Cristian Chivu has expressed his immense respect for Mikel Arteta ahead of the Nerazzurri’s crucial Champions League clash with Arsenal on Tuesday, admitting he views the Spaniard as a figure to learn from.
In his pre-match press conference, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chivu was full of praise for his counterpart and the identity he has instilled in the North London club.
“He’s a young coach, but he’s experienced and ambitious enough. I admire him for the identity he’s instilled in his team. I try to learn from him, as from all good colleagues. They control the game, play vertically, counterattack, and score from second balls. The truth is, you have to be very mature to avoid them hurting us.”
Chivu also touched upon the technical threats posed by the Gunners, specifically their renowned proficiency from dead-ball situations. The Inter coach suggested that his side must aim to match that level of danger when the opportunity arises.
“Arsenal are very good at set pieces, but they too are perhaps worried because we score goals that way too.”
Chivu noted further, indicating that the Nerazzurri have to put an end to their poor run in big games so far this season.
“We’re facing the strongest team in Europe, along with Bayern but for a couple of months we’ve gotten used to approaching every match the same way.”
“One at a time. A club like ours must never have a lapse in concentration and must always give our all, regardless of the opponent. We certainly want to stay in the top eight to advance straight to the next round, to break the taboo that’s been talked about so much.”
Inter had beaten Arsenal 1-0 in the group stages of the Champions League and the Gunners had also failed to beat Atalanta in the competition.
In general, Nerazzurri have done well in the Champions League historically and have also impressed in major games. But their performances have come under question in the ongoing campaign due to their inability to put chances away.
