Inter have added a high-profile option to their shortlist of targets to replace Yann Sommer in the summer, as Guglielmo Vicario is having a tough time at Tottenham and could be open to returning to Serie A next summer, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The Spurs haven’t been particularly competitive domestically since he joined, while they won the UEFA Europa League last year. He was heavily booed by the fans after a gaffe in the most recent game.
Inter were keen on Vicario when he left Empoli, but they had to finalize the sale of André Onana to Manchester United first at the time, and Tottenham acted more swiftly. They snapped him up for €18.5M. He has appeared 93 times since, allowing 130 goals and keeping 23 clean sheets.
Despite playing in England, the goalie has a manageable salary, £2.5M. On the other hand, the Nerazzurri hierarchy would have to convince the ownership to spend on a veteran. The higher-ups prefer signing younger players. Secondly, they’d obviously have to reach an agreement with the Spurs. They are tough bargainers and helmed by former Juventus director Fabio Paratici, who has completed his suspension. The shot-stopper could be worth around €30M.
He’d be an excellent solution to what is shaping up to be their main priority next summer. On the other hand, it’s mighty tough and expensive to buy linchpins from the London outfit. He’d have to ask out for the deal even to become a minor possibility. We’ll see whether he’ll do it after the recent events and due to his team’s struggles in general.
