The race to succeed Gabriele Gravina as FIGC president is intensifying, with Inter Milan’s Giuseppe Marotta moving quickly to build support for Giovanni Malago ahead of tomorrow’s Serie A assembly.
According to La Repubblica, via FCInterNews, Marotta is actively collecting signatures in favour of Malagò, the former CONI president.
Indeed, with the intention of arriving at tomorrow’s meeting with a majority of clubs already backing the candidate, effectively positioning him as the frontrunner ahead of the June 22nd elections.
The manoeuvre has not gone down well with everyone.
Milan, Juventus and Parma are among the clubs reportedly irritated by Marotta’s proactive approach.
Furthermore, Corriere della Sera notes that while many clubs respect Malagò, who oversaw Italy’s haul of 40 medals across the last two Olympic Games, “not everyone wants it to appear to public opinion as the Inter candidate.”
As a result, Milan have moved to explore the availability of Adriano Galliani, the club’s legendary former chief executive, as an alternative candidate.
Therefore, what had appeared to be a straightforward process is quickly becoming a more contested battle.
The June 22nd elections remain some weeks away.
However, tomorrow’s assembly will give the first clear indication of how the landscape is taking shape and whether Marotta‘s early groundwork has been enough to give Malagò a decisive head start.
