Inter president Beppe Marotta has clarified remarks made during his appearance at the Executive Master in Sport Management by the RCS Academy, after his reference to Jose Mourinho was widely interpreted as a veiled jab.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport, Marotta’s intention was not to criticise Mourinho.

Instead, it was to underline Inter’s conviction in appointing Cristian Chivu as head coach.

Indeed, a decision that initially raised eyebrows outside the club.

“I’m surprised that people were shocked by Chivu’s quality,” Marotta had said during the event.

“We chose him because he represents important values. It took courage to go against the grain, even in the media. Some even wanted Mourinho, with all due respect… If I hadn’t had courage, I would have regretted it.”

In comments later shared with Corriere dello Sport, Marotta clarified the intent behind the quote.

It wasn’t aimed at Mourinho, but at reinforcing Inter’s commitment to a younger, forward-looking project.

The president highlighted how appointing Chivu was a deliberate move built on trust and long-term vision.

With Inter now joint-top of Serie A and thriving in the Champions League, Marotta’s message, and his defence of Chivu, underscores a belief that courage in leadership has helped steer the Nerazzurri into a new, promising era.
