Inter president Beppe Marotta described tonight’s Derby della Madonnina as a historic moment for the club, marking the first meeting with AC Milan since the Nerazzurri completed the purchase of the San Siro area for their new stadium project.

Speaking alongside Milan president Paolo Scaroni on DAZN, Marotta stressed the symbolic weight of the evening.

“This is the first derby in our own home, and it’s a historic event,” he said, with quotes via FCInterNews.

“It’s a date that will remain in the history of the derby and Italian football. It’s the first time two clubs have taken on such an important operation together.”

Marotta also emphasised the duty to respect the existing stadium, even as Inter move towards construction of their future home.

“We must respect this structural icon – a container of great emotions and passion. Our responsibility is to build a new home that preserves that possibility for future generations.”

Inter enter the derby top of the Serie A table, adding another layer to the occasion, even if Marotta refuses to dress the match up as a title decider.

“This is the beauty of football,” he said. “On one hand it unites, on the other it creates competition where results are fundamental. But the derby has a special charm regardless of the standings. We’re still in an early phase. The important thing is continuing our good performances. It’s far too soon to talk about the Scudetto.”

Marotta also confirmed discussions with Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso regarding the league schedule being adjusted for the Azzurri’s World Cup play-off matches.

“The national team is a heritage of our football,” he said.

“As clubs, we must ensure Italy can prepare in the best possible conditions. We’re fully committed to helping them through two demanding but achievable matches. Italy simply cannot miss the World Cup.”
