Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries has opened up on his relationship with his Netherlands teammate Steven Bergwijn.

Speaking in a press conference, as relayed by FCInterNews, Dumfries hailed a decent rapport with the Ajax winger.

Dumfries and Bergwijn partnered up on the right flank as Ronald Koeman’s side thumped Romania 3-0 in Tuesday’s EURO 2024 Round-of-16 tie.

Despite not always being the first-choice at Inter last season, the former PSV Eindhoven star has been indispensable for the Oranje this summer.

After an impressive group-stage campaign, Denzel Dumfries delivered another superb performance to help the Dutch reach the quarter-finals of a European Championship for the first time since 2008.

But it was the first time at the tournament that Koeman handed Bergwijn a chance to start.

It didn’t go well for the ex-Tottenham Hotspur forward.

Following an underwhelming first-half showing, Koeman withdrew him at half-time in favor of Donyell Malen.

Bergwijn did combine well with Dumfries, though.

“Steven and I have played a lot of games on the right in the past, like on my debut for the national team, but not yet in this tournament,” Dumfries said.

“I know Steven through and through. I know what he wants and he knows what I want.”

“Steven is a great player.”

Koeman’s decision to introduce Malen at the start of the second half proved a massive hit.

The Borussia Dortmund forward bagged a quick-fire double beyond the 80th minute to kill the game off.

Dumfries watched Malen’s back, allowing the lightning-fast winger to work his magic up front. The Inter defensive stalwart said: “That connection is there, but also with Donyell Malen.”

Dumfries should be in the starting line-up when the Netherlands take on Turkey in the last eight.
