Inter Milan will only extend the contract of one out of defenders Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi next summer.

This according to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb. They report that one of the two ex-Lazio veterans will receive a new deal, but not the other.

De Vrij and Acerbi remain Inter’s two main options in the central role of the back three.

Both of the two veteran defenders have remained at the level required. Their performances this season have been reliable.

However, there is no getting around the fact that both de Vrij and Acerbi are well into their thirties. The former turned 33 this month, while the latter just turned 37.

Therefore, Inter will certainly have to start planning for the future.

Inter Will Only Extend One Of De Vrij & Acerbi

For some time, it has seemed as though de Vrij would be the player to receive a contract extension.

The Nerazzurri have the option to unilaterally extend the Dutchman’s deal by one season. But they have reportedly been thinking about offering him a new contract until the end of June 2027.

There would be a couple reasons why a new deal for de Vrij would seem likelier than one for Acerbi.

De Vrij is four years younger than Acerbi. And moreover, the latter has dealt with injuries this season which cast significant doubt on his reliability.

However, Acerbi’s return to the starting eleven against Fiorentina on Monday underline how important he can be for Inter.

Therefore, there is now a feeling that Acerbi is still a candidate for a new deal despite his age.

But one thing is clear, reports TMW. Only one of de Vrij and Acerbi will receive new deals – not both.
