Inter failed to defend their Supercoppa Italiana crown in one of the most fascinating finals in the competition’s recent memory. Simone Inzaghi’s men let a two-goal cushion slip through their wingers in a heart-wrenching 3-2 defeat to Milan in the Riyadh-held showpiece.
Marcus Thuram’s absence due to a muscle injury derailed Inter’s spirits following a routine 2-0 semifinal win against Atalanta. However, the Frenchman’s replacement, Mehdi Taremi, set Lautaro Martinez up for the opening goal on the stroke of halftime.
El Toro was ruthless, putting Inter in front with only his second goal since the start of December. Taremi went from a provider to a finisher at the beginning of the second half. His calm finish was supposed to kill the game off and seal what would’ve been a record-breaking fourth consecutive Super Cup trophy for the Nerazzuri.
Unfortunately for the five-time winner Inzaghi, Milan had other plans. Theo Hernandez slammed home a thunderous free-kick to cut the distance in half before Christian Pulisic leveled the score with a phenomenal finish from a tough spot.
Inter suffered late heartbreak as Tammy Abraham scored off the bench to complete Milan’s memorable comeback and condemn the Nerazzurri to back-to-back H2H defeats for the first time since 2011. Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.
Yann Sommer – 6
Despite Milan’s feeble dominance in the first half, he didn’t have to make any meaningful save to avert the danger. The Swiss goalkeeper was far busier after the break but couldn’t do much to prevent Milan from claiming the title.
Alessandro Bastoni – 7
His last-ditch defending to block Alex Jimenez’s cross denied Alvaro Morata a clear-cut chance toward the end of the first half. What a block to thwart Tijjani Reijnders in the second half!
Stefan de Vrij – 6.5
Calm and collected in possession, the Dutch defender barely put his foot wrong tonight. Set up Taremi with an incredible defense-splitting long ball!
Yann Bisseck – 4
Apart from being outclassed by Reijnders’ excellent piece of skill early on, the German youngster enjoyed a decent first half. Humbled by Rafa Leao after the break!
Federico Dimarco – 6
Except for forcing Maignan’s spectacular diving save midway through the first half, the Italian wingback had a relatively quiet game by his high standard.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6
The Armenian veteran held up his end of the bargain, keeping the ball moving with precision and purpose. Heavily involved in Inter’s opener!
Hakan Calhanoglu – 5.5
Whether he was feeling pain from the start, the Turkish playmaker seemed up the creek without a paddle before being replaced just after the half-hour mark.
Nicolo Barella – 7
The beating heart of the Inter midfield, Barella was again heavily involved in the build-up play and early set up Taremi for the opening goal.
Denzel Dumfries – 6.5
Perhaps his well-documented rivalry with Theo Hernandez derailed his focus as he stuttered on both ends of the field, especially in the front third.
Mehdi Taremi – 7.5
Inter could’ve taken the lead sooner had he not fluffed his lines. However, he atoned with an assist to Lautaro for the opening goal before netting only his second goal for the Nerazzurri at the start of the second half!
Lautaro Martinez – 7
Harshly criticized for his wasteful form in recent months, El Toro silenced his detractors with a delightful solo goal to put Inter in front.
Kristjan Asllani – 6.5
Carlos Augusto – 6
Piotr Zielinski – 5
