The Canaries are on the hunt for a new manager after relieving Johannes Hoff Thorup of his duties in April, following a dismal run of one win in eight
Ex-Premier League footballer and current Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendries believes Norwich City could be the "ideal football club" for Pep Lijnders to start his managerial career in England at, following reports the former Liverpool assistant is set to be interviewed for the position.
The Canaries are on the hunt for a new manager after relieving Johannes Hoff Thorup of his duties in April, following a dismal run of one win in eight league games.
As per John Percy of The Telegraph, Lijnders, who was Jurgen Klopp's trusted assistant at Liverpool for nearly a decade, is set to hold talks with Norwich. He's already got a big taste for success in the country, helping the Reds secure a Premier League trophy, one FA Cup and two League cups - that's without mentioning the Champions League.
Although, Lijnders' solo management hasn't started how he would've hoped, with a brief stint at Red Bull Salzburg ending after just a few months at the helm. In fact, he managed only 13 wins from a possible 26, which won't inspire many given the dominance RB Salzburg have in Austria.
The former Aston Villa midfielder believes that while Lijnders has some pedigree from his time at Liverpool, if he were to bring success to Norwich, he'd need strong financial backing.
Speaking exclusively to FLW, Hendrie said, "He’s been linked with so many jobs hasn’t he and obviously, working under Jurgen Klopp, I think he’s stated that he does want to go into management and he wants to give it a go. I think it’d be an ideal football club for him to maybe brand his identity, his style, his way.
"I think that Norwich will probably need to invest, or give him an idea of investing and bringing players in of his calibre that he can work with because it’s okay going into a football club when you’ve worked under a top manager, we’ve seen it with Maresca but I think you’ve got the fundamentals, the squad and the players to deal with that, it does make your decision a lot easier.
"It will be an interesting one to keep an eye on because if they are obviously going to give him the opportunity to bring better players in, because they will lose players as well, that’d be the interesting one because the likes of Sargent and Sainz, probably going to end up going, then you’re sort of looking at a rebuild, bringing fresh blood in and that will entice him to take that opportunity."
Hendrie mentioned the likelihood of key departures from Carrow Road this summer as a factor that could actually tempt the Dutchman to take the job, letting him have full reign at the chance to build a squad his own way.
The potential exits of star players like USA international Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz seem increasingly likely. Despite the former saying he's "very happy" in NR1, a summer move isn't ruled out after scoring 15 goals in the Championship this past season. This could give Lijnders a very nice budget to work with.
Time will tell whether Norwich decide to go further with Lijnders after their discussions, but Hendrie's view on the matter implies that Lijnders could be a good fit for Norwich if given all the right recipes for success.
There surely has to be something in him after having worked closely with a world-class manager in Klopp, and he does boast an impressive trophy cabinet - regardless of being an assistant or not.
