Inzaghi: ‘Inter win again, but cannot keep conceding these goals’

Simone Inzaghi is celebrating Inter’s third win in a week, but also admits conceding this many Serie A goals is ‘not something we can continue to do’ after beating Torino 3-2.

The Nerazzurri got the three points this evening, but they made a real slog of it, especially considering Toro were down to 10 men from the 20th minute for Guillermo Maripan’s straight red card catching Marcus Thuram’s ankle.

Thuram went on to score a hat-trick, though Duvan Zapata and a late Nikola Vlasic penalty managed to keep 10-man Torino in the game right to the final whistle.

“This team played three games in a week and won all three. We had to react after the derby and I cannot complain about the commitment of the squad, because we deservedly won all three,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia.

Those were 3-2 wins over Udinese and Torino around the 4-0 Champions League triumph over Crvena Zvezda.

“Clearly, we need to improve in some aspects, we pay a heavy price for every tiny distraction. We worked really hard on details that need to be whittled down, the lads have great spirit, but considering everything we did today, it cannot end 3-2.

“Torino never gave up, their goalkeeper made a lot of saves and we weren’t as precise in our finishing, that is all true. However, considering it was the third game in a week and we won them all, I cannot complain.”

Inter rotate, but Inzaghi has some guarantees

Inzaghi rotated the squad midweek and made seven changes, but the only players he can’t seem to do without are Alessandro Bastoni – who provided two assists today – Hakan Calhanoglu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Why are they in every game?

“At this moment, they just seem to be in good physical shape. Bastoni and Calhanoglu had a few early substitutions to give them some time off. I need everyone, they are all training hard and make me think hard about my picks, but these choices are all made based on what I see in training.”

It is notable that while they have not conceded a single goal in two Champions League games, Inter are very distracted in Serie A and have leaked nine in just seven rounds. Is there a difference in focus between Europe and Italy?

“Manchester City and Red Star we didn’t concede, but could’ve done,” warned Inzaghi.

“There are moments like this in football and we’re trying to work on it, because we know that what we’re doing right now is not enough. I am glad the lads work so hard and are eager to learn. Fortunately, both today and against Udinese we conceded two goals and still won the matches, but it’s not something we can continue to do.”
