The Tractor Boys are interested in adding to their back-line before the transfer window slams shut on September 1

Ipswich Town are eyeing up a move for Uruguay international defender Sebastián Cáceres, as they plot to spend the windfall they're set to land from Omari Hutchinson's imminent move to Nottingham Forest.

The Tractor Boys haven't been crazily busy when it comes to incomings at Portman Road following their relegation from the Premier League, but they have signed six new faces, including the return of Swedish midfielder Jens Cajuste from Napoli on another loan deal.

With the aforementioned Hutchinson on the verge of a £37.5 million move to the City Ground though, Ipswich are set to have some fresh cash to play with, but it's perhaps a surprise that a new defender is being lined up by the club's recruitment team.

According to a report from TWTD, Ipswich have now set their sights on Sebastiàn Càceres, who plies his trade for Club América in the top flight of Mexican football.

The 25-year-old has international pedigree, having been capped 20 times for Uruguay's national team after making his debut in September 2022, and since 2020 he has played his club football in Mexico after starting out at Liverpool Montevideo.

A back-to-back Liga MX winner with América, Càceres played 25 times in league action in 2024-25, and although he started the first two matches of the 2025-26 season, the centre-half was an unused substitute last weekend against Querétaro.

Ipswich have already added to their back-line this summer with the addition of ex-West Brom man Cédric Kipré, but Kieran McKenna evidently fancies bolstering it further with the pursuit of Càceres on their minds.

There's no suggestion that a deal for Càceres to join Ipswich Town is close whatsoever, but he would be joining a very strong set of options that Kieran McKenna has if a transfer agreement is struck.

You'd expect Dara O'Shea and Jacob Greaves to be McKenna's first-choice partnership of the players that he currently has at his disposal, and at Championship level, it would be hard to better that as a pairing.

Cédric Kipré is also waiting in the wings for his first league start as a Tractor Boys player, and fourth in-command is Luke Woolfenden, who is a talented player in his own right.

For Càceres to add to that, you'd imagine there would be an outgoing to free up some space, and that would likely be Woolfenden if one had to go, and given his international pedigree, it's hard to argue that the South American defender wouldn't be a good addition in Suffolk.
