The Iranian football federation said in a statement that it cannot supply any tickets to Iranian supporters for the World Cup starting on 11 June, alleging the United States has unexpectedly withdrawn its allocation and, with fewer than three days until kick-off, was preventing fans from attending group games.

A FIFA regulation allocates 8% of tickets for each match to the competing national federations, for resale or distribution to supporters.

The squad secured US entry visas last Friday, although some staff were refused, and arrived in Mexico on Monday to continue preparations.

The development could leave Iranian fans unable to attend their team’s matches.

Iran are in Group G and are due to face New Zealand on 16 June at 3:00 and Belgium on 21 June at 21:00 in Los Angeles, then Egypt on 27 June at 5:00 in Seattle.
