Is it time for Salah to rethink his future? Former Liverpool defends Egyptian star and hints at Anfield exit

Dietmar Hamann believes Mohamed Salah is being treated unfairly at Liverpool and says the Egyptian star should consider leaving.

Liverpool struggles without Salah

Liverpool’s problems in the Premier League continued during Salah’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations. On Saturday 17 January, the reigning champions drew 1 - 1 with Burnley, their fourth straight league draw while the Egyptian was away with Egypt who finished fourth at AFCON.

Those results have fueled debate around Salah’s importance to the team. While head coach Arne Slot welcomed the forward’s return calling him vital even if he had “15 attacker”, Hamann took different view of the situation.

“It’s wrong to blame him”

Speaking on Saturday to betting platform BETGOAT, the former Liverpool midfielder said Salah is paying the price for the team’s poor form. According to Hamann, Liverpool struggled even without their top scorer making it unfair to point fingers at him.

Hamann was clear that Salah should not be held responsible for the drop in results. For him, the performances during Salah’s absence say more about the team than the player.

A warning over competition and roles

However Hamann also questioned Salah’s attitude toward competition. He said he did not like the Egyptian’s recent comment about not wanting to fight for his place especially after new signings arrived at the club.

The German raised direct question, would Salah accept being on the bench if Slot felt another player was performing better? If not, Hamann suggested that leaving Liverpool could be the right move.

Six months that could decide everything

Hamann also pointed to Salah’s reduced impact from open play since December 2024 wondering how much influence the forward can still have as he gets older.

For Hamann the next six month will be crucial. They could either mark fresh start for Salah at Anfield or push one of Liverpool’s greatest modern players toward major decision about his future.
