Barcelona decided not to renew Robert Lewandowski’s contract, with the veteran striker expected to leave at the end of the season.

Lewandowski nearing the end at Barcelona

Barcelona preparing for major change in attack, with reports confirming that the club does not plan to extend the contract of Robert Lewandowski which runs until the end of the current season.

According to Catalunya Ràdio, Barcelona have already drawn up summer transfer plan that includes signing a new striker and strengthening the defensive line.

The decision signals the likely departure of the experienced Polish forward after two season in Spain.

Lewandowski now 37 years old has seen his role reduced this campaign, with head coach Hansi Flick often preferring Ferran Torres as the central striker.

Playing time drops despite solid numbers

Although his minutes have decreased, Lewandowski has still contributed in front of goal.

He has played 26 match this season scoring 12 goal and providing three assist across all competitions.

However the club appears focused on building a younger attacking unit led by talents such as Raphinha & Lamine Yamal, with Torres frequently starting ahead of the veteran.

Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022 in deal worth around €50 million but is now approaching the final months of his contract meaning he will soon be free to speak with other clubs.

Deadline set as future options grow

Polish journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk reported that Lewandowski has set April deadline to decide his next move.

The timing is linked to Barcelona’s presidential elections on 15 March as the outcome could influence the club’s sporting strategy moving forward.

Financial context behind the decision

Barcelona’s plans are also tied to their financial recovery.

The same report noted that the club is close to reaching Spain’s 1:1 financial rule which would allow Barca to reinvest money earned from player sales and wage reductions.

The club reportedly needs around €12 million more to activate this rule.

Barcelona faced repeated problems in recent seasons due to high wage bills and strict La Liga spending limits.
