Despite making it to the League Cup final, Newcastle United has recently lacked consistency in the Premier League, with three defeats in their past four outings. After last weekend’s 4-0 humiliation against Manchester City, the Magpies hosted Nottingham Forest this afternoon at St James’ Park. Forest, who are third in the league standings, had a perfect start with a goal in the early minutes.
However, Eddie Howe’s men reacted exquisitely as they scored four times in just over 10 minutes midway through the first half. The visitors netted twice inside the final 30 minutes of the match, but the seven-goal thriller ended 4-3 in favour of the Toon Army.
Below are the Newcastle United players rated in their 4-3 win against Nottingham Forest.
Nick Pope: 6
Replaced Martin Dubravka between the sticks. Could not have done a lot to stop Callum Hudson-Odoi, Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates from finding the net, but he played his part in the build-up of his side’s fourth goal of the afternoon.
Tino Livramento: 7
Had some nervy occasions against Hudson-Odoi, but the Englishman showed his maturity with timely tackles, recoveries and no-nonsense clearances while performing his defensive duties. Created a few chances high up the pitch with his overlapping runs and long balls.
Fabian Schar: 6
Had his header denied off the woodwork soon after the break. Managed the game well against Chris Wood as the latter had limited touches in the Magpies box. His late block went in vain as it fell to Ryan Yates who made it 4-3 minutes before the final whistle.
Dan Burn: 6
Was confident with his passing game. Dominated the duels but he lost the ball in a dangerous area which eventually led to Milenkovic’s goal from the resulting corner. Struggled against Forest’s direct play and set-pieces.
Lewis Hall: 8
Was spot on with his tackles throughout the game. Looked lively down the left as the youngster set it up for Lewis Miley for the equalizer around the 23rd-minute mark. Also played his part in the next two goals by whipping in crosses.

Bruno Guimaraes: 6.5
Had a mixed outing deep down the midfield. Lost the majority of duels, but he made some crucial interceptions and recoveries while featuring as a ‘number 6’. Carried the ball forward from the deep to operate in the advanced areas.
Lewis Miley: 8
His fantastic finish instigated the hosts’ comeback overcoming a dreadful start. The teenager worked hard in the centre of the pitch as he helped his side dominate possession by winning the ball back time and again.
Joe Willock: 7.5
Scripted a quick counter-attack before setting it up for Isak’s second which proved to be the decider. His passing, dribbling and down-the-middle runs often stretched and created space in the Forest defence. Was replaced by Sandro Tonali midway through the second half.
Jacob Murphy: 7.5
Was at fault for Hudson-Odoi’s opener. But he found the net to earn a 2-1 lead around the 25th-minute mark. Made way for Harvey Barnes midway through the second half.
Anthony Gordon: 7
Drew fouls on multiple occasions as he caused menace in the Forest defence with his flair, finesse and swift footwork. Contributed to the build-up of Murphy’s goal.
Alexander Isak: 8.5
Sharp high up the pitch with two goals within a minute. First, he slotted home from the spot before his strike deflected off Murillo to beat past Matz Sels. Got replaced by Callum Wilson in the closing minutes of the contest.
Harvey Barnes: 6
Offered little since replacing Murphy down the flank.
Sandro Tonali: 6
Was brought in to have more control in midfield.
Callum Wilson:
