Richard Keys has been talking about Newcastle United yet again.

However, this time a little different.

It all feels a bit weird but I actually find myself agreeing with Richard Keys on this occasion.

I suppose he has to get it right sometime.

Richard Keys talking about this past weekend, with special mention of Eddie Howe.

Richard Keys writing on his personal blog – 23 September 2025:

“I noted only one real clanger by VAR – that was a stick-on pen for Newcastle at Bournemouth.

“If you didn’t see it – Woltemade clearly had his shirt pulled by Diskite in the box.

“The ref missed it. VAR shouldn’t have done.

“Eddie Howe had every right to be furious, but was politely calm of course.

“It should’ve been a pen though.”

At the time, I couldn’t believe the penalty wasn’t given.

Then watching the TV replays that the VAR would have seen, how can he not send the on the pitch referee to the screen at the side of the pitch?

I think that Richard Keys also makes another good point, even if it is inadvertently.

Eddie Howe DID say he thought a penalty should have been given, but as Richard Keys indicates, it isn’t his (Howe’s) way to make a huge issue of it when Newcastle United are badly done to by match officials.

It does feel like maybe at times this goes against Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.

The way certain other managers go on, making a huge issue of decisions they don’t like, clearly trying to influence match officials in future matches and getting the media to do their dirty work. There again, who would want to have an embarrassing character such as Mikel Arteta managing your club?

It is consecutive Premier League matches now where Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United players have seen really poor decisions go against them.

Far worse than the Nick Woltemade non-penalty at Bournemouth, was when both the on the pitch referee and the VAR, somehow managed to decide it wasn’t a red card for the last man shocking challenge on Harvey Barnes by a Wolves defender. United not even getting a free-kick!
