Former Manchester United manager and current Austria national team boss Ralf Rangnick has doubled down on his past remark that the club needed “open heart surgery.”

Rangnick spent seven months at United as interim manager, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in November 2021.

The German’s brief spell in the Old Trafford dugout was a tumultuous one, as he guided the side to a record-low Premier League points tally of 58.

In one of his sessions with reporters, Rangnick insisted that the Red Devils were in need of an “open heart surgery” amidst major concerns over the quality of players in the squad.

United have not started this season well, with Erik ten Hag’s men already slipping to two league defeats – the most recent one of which was a humiliating 3-0 loss at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool.

Now Rangnick has rubbed sale in United’s wounds, doubling down on his earlier “open heart surgery” comment.

He told TV2, “I probably made that statement when the season was almost over about two years ago.”

“It is probably only two or three weeks since Erik ten Hag was asked the same thing. Then he said that I was right in my analysis.”

“I don’t know how many players they have signed since, but it looks like I was right.”

He added, “Before I left for Manchester, I had a long and thorough talk with Solskjaer, two hours in fact. But there is no point in going into detail, it was a long time ago and is not exciting.”

“But I am coach for Austria now and am not close enough to United to assess the status there.”

United return to action on Saturday when they travel to St Mary’s to face newly-promoted Southampton.”
