Xavi Espart’s first-team debut for Barcelona lasted only seven minutes, but for a La Masia player, that is more than enough to become a memory for life.
The young defender came on during the closing stages of the Champions League last-16 first leg against Newcastle, with the tie still tense and the pressure high.
It was not a comfortable debut in a relaxed league game. It was a serious European night. As quoted by AS, here is what Espart said about his debut:
“It was crazy, everything happened very quickly. I was warming up and when I had to come on I did not expect it and suddenly I found myself on the pitch without expecting it.”
He continued:
“It was only seven minutes, but I lived them at a thousand revolutions. It was a dream for me. I have been at Barca since I was very young and to debut like that, in a limit Champions League match, was tremendous. Gordon was around there, although I did not have to cover him (laughs).”
For Barcelona fans, the key detail is not just that Espart debuted. It is where and when Hansi Flick chose to use him.
A Champions League knockout match against Newcastle is not the easiest stage for a teenager. Yet Flick trusted him in a moment when one mistake could have changed the mood of the tie.
That matters for Espart’s pathway. Coaches often praise academy players in press conferences, but giving them minutes in high-pressure matches sends a stronger message.
Espart’s reaction also feels very Barca. He did not describe the debut as a routine step. He understood the emotional size of it.
This is why La Masia remains different. When a player who has grown up inside the club finally steps onto the pitch, it just feels different.
Espart still has plenty to prove, and seven minutes do not guarantee anything. However, he did well to catch the eye, even in subsequent appearances.
The challenge now is for him to keep learning and growing. It remains to be seen how things play out.
