Italy aim to conclude their impressive Nations League group campaign when France arrive in Milan this evening.
Luciano Spalletti’s side have bounced back from a disappointing Euro 2024 to go unbeaten in five Nations League games and Italy will secure progress as group winners if they avoid a defeat by two or more goals.
The Azzurri’s campaign included an impressive 3-1 win in France on matchday one, while further wins over Israel and Belgium have secured progress to the quarter-finals with a game to spare.
Spalletti must make the difficult selection between two of Serie A’s in-form forwards this evening. Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean sit first and second for goals in Italy’s top division, with the latter having hit a hat-trick in Fiorentina’s 3-1 win over Verona last weekend. However, Retegui leads the Capocannoniere award standings with 11 goals in 12 games for Atalanta. He has also scored twice in his last three internationals.
Sandro Tonali scored his first international goal in the 1-0 win in Belgium on Thursday, following his recent return from a 10-month ban for breaching gambling rules.
The Newcastle midfielder should continue in the engine room alongside Davide Frattesi and Manuel Locatelli, with Nicolo Barella tasked with providing support to a lone forward.
Italy predicted XI: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Buongiorno, Bastoni; Cambiaso, Frattesi, Locatelli, Tonali, Dimarco; Barella; Retegui.
Italy host France at the San Siro on Sunday 17th November 2024. Kick-off in the Nations League clash is 19:45 GMT.
