After the bitter loss in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern are already planning for the coming season. While many fans and experts are calling for major changes to the squad, sporting director Christoph Freund has now given the first indications of the Munich club’s transfer strategy
The semi-final defeat to PSG is still deeply felt at FC Bayern. After the 4:5 in the first leg, the 1:1 in the second leg at the Allianz Arena was no longer enough for the Munich team to reach the Champions League final
Despite the disappointment, Christoph Freund did not want to talk down the current season at the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match against VfL Wolfsburg. „The conditions were very good against Paris, there were details. The course of the game was not as we would have liked,“ explained the sporting director
At the same time, the 48-year-old emphasized that the record champions are still playing at a very high level: „But this season is already exceptionally good – we’re playing great soccer and consistently putting in strong performances. It’s fun to watch – even if it was bitter on Wednesday.“
This is precisely why the Champions League exit is obviously not being interpreted as a trigger for a complete reorientation. „We are always discussing improvements, what else can help the team? This is very complex and has nothing to do with one match,“ Freund made clear
Internally, the squad is already undergoing intensive analysis to determine which adjustments can be made to further optimize the squad. „We will sit down together again to see how we can improve even further.“

Particularly interesting: Freund let it slip that FC Bayern are apparently not planning an XXL shake-up despite numerous transfer rumors. „We are very happy with the squad we have, but of course we want to improve in detail,“ explained the Austrian
This suggests that those in charge prefer targeted reinforcements rather than a major transfer offensive. Names such as Anthony Gordon continue to be linked with the record champions, but internally it seems that they are continuing to focus on controlled squad planning
Freund’s statement was particularly clear with regard to the size of the Bayern squad: „We want to maintain our basic approach that our squad should not be too big,“ emphasized the sporting director
Conversely, this could mean that potential new additions will first have to make room in the current squad, with important decisions to be made in the summer, particularly regarding players such as Leon Goretzka, Joao Palhinha and a number of loan returnees
For the time being, however, FC Bayern will continue to focus on the remaining goals of the current season. Having already won the championship, the Munich club also want to bring the DFB Cup home to Munich.
