Ivan Toney could return to the Premier League in the near future after “a number” of clubs “started enquiries” about a possible move.
The striker has been playing in Saudi Arabia since the summer of 2024, when he left Brentford to join Al-Ahli for £40 million.
Toney is contracted until 2028, but may look for a way back to England ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup. He last played for England under Thomas Tuchel in June, but has not been selected for the upcoming qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.
According to Sky Sports News, several Premier League clubs have enquired about the possibility of signing Toney ahead of the January transfer window.
Everton are said to be one of the teams who have looked into it. The Toffees have scored 12 goals in 11 top-flight games this season with frontman Beto failing to convince up top.
A reunion with former Brentford boss Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur could be on the cards. Spurs were linked with the 29-year-old before his move to Saudi and recent reports suggest they might go back in for him.
Manchester United were another club previously linked with the centre-forward and may reignite their interest, although they did spend £74 million on Benjamin Sesko in the summer and reportedly have no plans to sign anyone in January. However, they will be without key attacker Bryan Mbeumo during the winter while he is away at AFCON.
Toney told the Guardian in September that he does not miss the Premier League and remains hopeful of earning an England recall.
“I have to concentrate on myself, give myself the best chance possible, and who knows? If I am selected, I will do my best for my country, but if not I’ll be cheering the boys on.”
He added: “My job is to do well. It is what it is. If you are good enough, you are good enough; it doesn’t matter where you are playing in the world. As long as you are doing the right things and scoring goals, then you give yourself a chance.”
