Pep Guardiola has admitted that his treatment of ‘unstoppable’ Jeremy Doku has been unfair in recent weeks.
Manchester City have struggled with injuries all season and Doku is one of the players that has spent significant time sidelined.
After returning to the team, he started five consecutive Premier League games. However, since then the Belgian winger has been absent from City’s starting eleven in each of their last three matches.
City boss Guardiola admitted: “I’ve been so unfair with him in the last games.
“I remember the games against Spurs away and against Brighton for example. Without him it would not have been possible.”
The Catalan explained: “But the only reason that he did not play lately is because we didn’t attack in the last games with wingers. We put more full-backs wide and more players in the middle.
“But it was not a reason for him to not play those games, it was only my reason.”
Although he has played without wingers in some recent matches, Guardiola has a number of attacking options at his disposal. Doku must compete for minutes in wide areas with Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Savinho, Oscar Bobb and Bernardo Silva.
Following their 2-0 victory at Goodison Park, City’s boss conceded: “I feel sorry for him and for the other ones.
“But today his impact was much, much better than at Old Trafford. At Old Trafford it was not good.”
On Doku’s 12 minute cameo against Everton, his manager added: “Today he had the ball, dropped the team and he threatened, arrived at the by-line.”
The 22-year-old arrived at the Etihad from Rennes for a £55 million fee last summer. The Belgian international is an electric player and is always keen to run at an opposition defence. Against Liverpool in February, he completed 15 take-ons- the highest by anyone in the Premier League this season.
He is always a handful for opposition defenders and Guardiola declared: “Jeremy in the final third is unstoppable.
“He is an incredible, incredible football player. I’m really pleased that today he played really good.”
