Daily Record reports that 49-year-old Jack Ross has been shortlisted to become the Scottish Football Association's chief football officer after Andy Gould left for a role at FIFA.

Ross led Sunderland from May 2018 to October 2019, taking over after consecutive relegations to League One. He finished fifth in year one, lost the play-off final 2-1 to Charlton, and the EFL Trophy final to Portsmouth on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

He was sacked early in 2019/20 with Sunderland sixth, the team later slipped to eighth before promotion a year later. Since then he has managed Hibernian, reaching a Scottish Cup final, and Dundee United, and is Newcastle United head of football strategy. Whether he would leave St James' Park is unclear.

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet will retire at season's end after announcing his decision on social media. He made 101 appearances for the Black Cats from 2010 to 2013, kept 33 clean sheets, and helped them finish 10th in the Premier League before joining Liverpool.

At Anfield he played 204 times and won the Champions League, plus runners-up medals in that competition, the EFL Cup and the Europa League. Now 38, he has spent seven years with Club Brugge, winning four league titles and three domestic cups. Brugge are second entering the play-offs with 10 games left, and the 35-cap Belgian aims to help secure a 20th title to add a second star, with only Anderlecht on 34 having more.
