Manchester United may owe a debt of gratitude to Marcus Rashford after his intervention helped seal the exit of another member of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ – Jadon Sancho.

Sancho’s switch to Villa Park

As relayed by The Peoples Person here, United reached an agreement with Aston Villa earlier today to send Sancho on loan to Villa Park for the season.

The switch will see the Villans pay 80% of the 25-year-old winger’s wage packet at Old Trafford, though this could easily rise to full coverage with easily achievable bonuses.

There is not thought to be a buy option or obligation included in the deal and United will receive a fee as part of the “straight loan“, as per Sky Sports.

In the circumstances, with the transfer deadline at 7pm fast approaching, it constitutes a reasonable deal for the Red Devils, given Sancho’s refusal to entertain better offers for the club elsewhere in favour of keeping his salary in tact.

The former Borussia Dortmund star, who cost United £73 million in 2021, has twelve months remaining on his contract at the Theatre of Dreams.

Reports are conflicted on whether the club intends to activate an automatic one-year extension in the deal in order to maintain Sancho’s transfer value; or, alternatively, simply let his contract expire next summer and wave goodbye to one of the worst signings in recent memory.

Either way, the issue has been kicked down the road for another season – and United have a small thank you to extend to Rashford helping facilitate the deal.

Sancho asked for Rashford’s advice

Graeme Bailey (TBR Football) reveals Sancho spoke to his English compatriot before committing to the move to Villa Park as Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan with the Villans.

“I am told that Sancho has spoken to Marcus Rashford before completing this deal – he wanted to make sure about the lie of the land.

“And Rashford was glowing in his support of the move. He told him what to expect, and that has played a part in Sancho deciding to make this move.”

Villa manager Unai Emery has an excellent reputation with helping attacking players rediscover their best form, as demonstrated by Rashford’s improvement in a claret and blue shirt. And this ultimately led to the 27-year-old Carrington graduate sealing a “dream move” to Barcelona this summer.

While Sancho is unlikely to be joining a top European side anytime soon, Villa Park can act as a refuge for a player who has completely lost his way since arriving in Manchester four years ago.

From United’s perspective, simply ridding themselves of an unwanted player on huge wages on the final day of the summer window is a win, even if every other part of Sancho’s time at Old Trafford has been a loss.
