The Baggies boss has revealed what position Albion need to address next during the summer transfer window.

West Brom are accelerating their pre-season activity as the 2026-27 Championship campaign draws closer.

After securing a 3-0 victory over League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday at St George’s Park, James Morrison’s men made it two wins from two when completing their overseas camp in Portugal, dispatching fellow third tier side Bromley 4-1 in Albufeira.

In terms of summer transfer activity, the Baggies had made a fast-paced start after retaining their Championship status by the skin of their teeth.

The Baggies kicked off their spending with the addition of forward Barney Stewart from Falkirk, then announcing the arrival of Liverpool defender Carter Pinnington, although the former Reds man will originally be placed into Albion’s U21’s setup for development.

Albion’s third and latest signing is of exciting Chelsea youngster Jimmy-Jay Morgan, who has impressed so far in pre-season and has been on the scoresheet in both their victories so far.

The England U20 international, like Stewart, has penned a four-year contract at The Hawthorns, with Albion spending an up-front fee of £1.3m, while add-ons could take it to as high as £4m.

But for a number of weeks, Albion’s transfer activity has worryingly quietened down, with the Black Country outfit still requiring a lot more quality additions that can improve each department, with controlling shareholder Shilen Patel echoing that sentiment by confirming in an open letter to supporters that their business is far from finished.

There are still voids to fill after eight players departed The Hawthorns following the conclusion of last season, with winger Karlan Grant the latest to be confirmed after securing a return to boyhood club Charlton Athletic.

Meanwhile, forward Josh Maja could make it nine, with the Nigerian international yet to pledge his future and expected to depart The Hawthorns himself on a free transfer.

With so many departures to deal with, Baggies boss Morrison has confirmed which areas Albion need to add to next as the new season continues to tick down.

Speaking to and as reported by the Express & Star’s Lewis Cox, West Brom boss James Morrison has admitted Albion’s next port of call in the summer transfer window is to bring in new wingers, with the club currently very short following the exits of Karlan Grant and Jed Wallace.

However, Morrison revealed he was ‘comfortable’ about the club bolstering that specific department well enough, with Albion’s season kicking off with a trip to Rotherham United in the Carabao Cup in three weeks’ time.

Morrison said: “Well, obviously, we need to get some wingers in.

“We haven't got one at the moment. But there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes. So I'm pretty comfortable.

“And we're all working together to get the right players in, at the right time. We have to be a little bit smart and patient.”

Albion currently only have one recognised winger in the form of Mikey Johnston, who himself is working his way back from an ankle fracture sustained at the back end of last season, while Isaac Price can fill in on the opposite flank, but is better used centrally.

If Morrison is to carry on with his 4-4-2 setup that worked wonders during his interim spell, then the Baggies will have to bring in wide options who have bags of pace and trickery, while possessing the nous to deliver quality balls into the box that can help give Albion an added edge and enough ammunition to be in the promotion mix.

Not to mention that the club will have to work frantically in order for those wingers to have enough minutes in pre-season before the Championship campaign kicks off, with all new additions needing the time to adjust to Morrison’s methods and way of working before being chucked into the Championship deep end.

With just over three weeks away until their League Cup clash, Albion must ramp up their transfer plans and address this winger crisis, as the club can’t allow the attack to be so stretched when needing a positive start to the 2026-27 second tier season.
