Defending champions are already seven points off the title pace after four defeats in a row
Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool have now entered “crisis time” after suffering yet another defeat in the Premier League, with “serious questions” being asked.
The reeling champions crashed to a 3-2 loss away at Brentford on Saturday night, their fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League after previously being bested by fierce rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Crystal Palace.
Formerly dominant Liverpool have now lost five of their last six games across all competitions, with the momentum from last week’s 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League quickly lost.
Such a disastrous run - which has come after they spent £446million in a record-breaking summer transfer window and then won their first seven matches of the season - has left Arne Slot’s side sitting seventh in the early Premier League table, already seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal after only nine games.
The warning signs for Liverpool were there even during their initially impressive start to the campaign, with plenty of goals being conceded and the team often being rescued by dramatic late goals, while they also have plenty of injury concerns with the likes of Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong, Alisson Becker and now Curtis Jones all sidelined.
“Losing four league games in a row for Brentford would be a disaster,” Reds legend and former defensive stalwart Carragher said on Sky Sports. “For any promoted team, you’d be looking at each other thinking, ‘we can’t lose four on the bounce’.
“To see the champions lose four games a row in the Premier League, with the expenditure in the summer, I think we’re in crisis time for Liverpool right now.
“There will be a lot of serious questions getting asked in the dressing room, the manager and the coaching staff, and also the people above the manager and the players as well.
“When they look at what they’ve actually spent, the players they went out and got, they will be expecting a lot more.”
Carragher highlighted Liverpool’s lack of height and physicality to cope with long throw-ins and set-pieces, success from which has been a big theme of the season so far - as Arsenal continue to prove.
He particularly focused in on Conor Bradley’s lack of physicality against Brentford and fellow full-back Milos Kerkez being caught out again, also calling Ibrahima Konate’s defending “horrific” for one of the goals conceded.
“I keep going back to Liverpool not being equipped for the way the Premier League is this season,” Carragher said.
He added: “It is something they have got to look at going forward, the actual physicality and height in the team. Because right now, I don’t think they’ve got enough of it.”
