Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Needs: Carragher’s Four-Point Plan

Jamie Carragher has delivered a clear assessment of where Liverpool must strengthen in the summer transfer window. As reported by Sky Sports, the former Reds captain believes four key areas require reinforcements if the club is to sustain its competitive edge next season.

Key Areas for Strengthening

Liverpool’s relative inactivity in the past two transfer windows has not hindered their form this season. Arne Slot’s men remain firmly in contention for the Premier League title and continue their UEFA Champions League campaign. Yet, as Carragher rightly points out, maintaining this level will require investment.

Speaking during Sky Sports transfer deadline day coverage, Carragher identified centre-forward, attacking midfield, and left-sided defence as priorities.

“There’s definitely areas of Liverpool’s team that can be really improved,” he explained.

“Centre forward is a position they could really improve in. I think attacking midfield is another one. A left-sided defender, too.”

While acknowledging Liverpool’s current depth in attack, Carragher still believes a defensive signing is necessary.

“If those players were available right now, I’m not sure they would do the attacking ones because they have enough numbers there.”

However, he stressed that defensive reinforcements—specifically a left-back or left-sided centre-back—should be a summer priority.

Liverpool’s Transfer Strategy

Liverpool’s cautious approach to the market has yielded mixed reactions. Since Arne Slot’s arrival, only two signings have been made: Federico Chiesa from Juventus and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who remains on loan at Valencia. While both are quality additions, a more proactive approach may be needed this summer.

Carragher acknowledges Liverpool’s successful recruitment over the past decade and trusts the club’s decision-making process.

“But for me, I have that much trust over what these guys tend to do over the last eight to ten years. Even if I think they should buy, I look at the operation at Liverpool and go: they know more than me.”

Defensive Reinforcements on the Radar?

Carragher has previously suggested that Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez could be a smart addition at left-back, a position Liverpool have needed more depth in for some time. With Andy Robertson returning from injury and Kostas Tsimikas as backup, a long-term defensive solution could be on the cards.

Liverpool’s recruitment team will have tough decisions to make in the summer, but with targeted investment, the club can ensure sustained success in the Slot era.

Liverpool fans will no doubt share Carragher’s concerns. While the club has defied expectations by remaining in title contention despite a quiet transfer window, there is an understanding that sustained success requires squad evolution.

A centre-forward is a crucial need. Darwin Núñez has shown flashes of brilliance but has yet to prove he can be a 25-goal-a-season striker. A clinical finisher could make the difference in tight matches where efficiency in front of goal is paramount.

The call for an attacking midfielder also resonates. While Liverpool boast creativity in midfield with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, an elite-level playmaker in the final third could add another dimension to their attack. Someone capable of breaking down deep-lying defences would be invaluable.

Defensively, the left-sided options need attention. Andy Robertson has had injuries this season and while Kostas Tsimikas is a reliable deputy, competition in that role is essential. A left-sided centre-back, especially one comfortable playing in a high defensive line, could provide Liverpool with further tactical flexibility.

Liverpool’s recruitment in recent years has been intelligent, often securing players before major needs become urgent. If Slot and his team act decisively, the summer window could be pivotal in shaping Liverpool’s next era of success.
