Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens praised fellow debutant Estevao’s stellar first game for the Blues as the Brazilian scored in the 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Gittens joined the club 10 days before the Club World Cup final but was unable to play in the competition. He was out in America to watch his new side lift the trophy, and spoke of his disappointment at not being able to play.
“It was difficult because I wanted to be part of that team playing in that tournament but I’m here now and that’s the main thing.”
On Estevao’s performance, Gittens said: “It was amazing. You’ve seen the Joga Bonito. He’s a great player with so much skill and attributes so it was great to see him play and score.
“We see it in training every day. He’s been here for a week and he’s already done mad things in training so to see it today was just one part of him doing it every day.”
Chelsea are stacked with forward and especially wing talent. Gittens is a left-winger but can also play as a No.10 and he doesn’t seem too fazed by the competition at the club: “It’s going to help me be a better player in the future. Training feels like a game everyday. You can’t have an off day. Having this competition will really help the team in general to be at a higher standard.”
After a very successful season last year, which saw Enzo Maresca’s side win the Europa Conference League, the Club World Cup and secure Champions League football, Gittens said the group feels confident about challenging for the Premier League this campaign.
“Yes, of course. We’re confident from the tournament we played in. Everyone’s feeling good so it will be a very exciting season for us to push ahead.”
