Manchester City striker Erling Haaland told Jamie Vardy of his personal inspiration from his runs in-behind Premier League defences.
The timing of the revelation coincides with a period of change for the reigning FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders, who are redesigning their forward landscape under incoming manager Enzo Maresca and Sporting Director Hugo Viana.
Following departures formalised this month – which saw long-serving club icons Bernardo Silva and John Stones exit as free agents – Maresca and Viana are tweaking the team ahead of the summer transfer window officially opening.
As some squad members prepare to reassemble at the City Football Academy for pre-season in July, Haaland’s appreciation for direct, intuitive forward movement outlines the requirements needed to reclaim the top-flight title from Arsenal in the new season.
Speaking on the ‘Jamie Vardy’s Having A Party’ podcast, the former Leicester City striker revealed the true details of one particular moment that led to disappointment from Foxes supporters at the Etihad Stadium.
“[We] Played Man City away [in 2023], lost. [Erling] Haaland just scored and we’re kicking off. I’m stood next to him on the halfway line and I let out a little laugh and got battered for it [by Leicester fans],” the English striker said.
He continued, “But I was only laughing because Haaland had come back and just turned round and went, ‘I got that run from watching videos of you’.
“So I had a little chuckle and went, ‘Well can you f*****g stop doing it?!'”
By combining Jamie Vardy’s devastating intuition for manipulating centre-backs with his own physical power, the 25-year-old Norwegian has built a hybrid profile that remains largely unplayable for modern defensive blocks.
As Hugo Viana works to hand Maresca a highly balanced, lethal frontline, this blueprint of attacking intelligence continues to inspire the next round of transfer targets, which are likely to feature a new wide winger as Savinho attracts attention from Tottenham.
The board’s parallel pursuit of complimentary right-backs to support Matheus Nunes – including reports of an enquiry for Chelsea’s Malo Gusto and a contract agreement with Atalanta’s Marco Palestra – is engineered to provide Haaland with a supply of service.
