Jaminton Campaz and his family have received death threats following Colombia’s World Cup last-16 defeat to Switzerland, after the winger missed a late chance. According to L'Équipe, the Colombian federation has moved to support them.
The tie finished 0-0 after extra time on Tuesday night, Colombia losing 3-4 on penalties. Campaz missed in the 115th minute, a chance that could have put his side into the quarter-finals.
The Colombian federation issued a statement on Friday condemning the threats and backing the player and his relatives. It urged the prosecutor’s office to accelerate investigations to identify, prosecute and punish those responsible.
A social media message from the 26-year-old reaffirmed his love for the national shirt and rejected hate or living in fear, even amid frustration and sadness.
The episode echoes the abuse directed at Carlos Sanchez, Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca during the 2018 World Cup. It also recalls the killing of Andrés Escobar on 2 July 1994 in a Medellin car park after his own goal against the United States led to Colombia’s elimination.
