Jay Stansfield wants to still be at Birmingham City when their new 62,000 capacity stadium opens

Jay Stansfield has commented on Birmingham City's prospective 62,000-capacity stadium - and he wants to be part of the Blues side playing in it when it opens.

Tom Wagner revealed the design for the new ground, nicknamed 'The Powerhouse', last month, which features 12 chimneys and will be built in the heart of the Sports Quarter.

The ground has a planned open date for the start of the 2030/31 campaign, which may seem a while away, but star striker Jay Stansfield still sees his future at Birmingham by then.

Stansfield will still be under contract with the Blues come 2030, and will only be 28, so it's a dream that could easily become reality.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Stansfield commented on the atmosphere that is generated at St Andrews when it hits capacity, which has been most weeks since the 22-year-old made the move to Birmingham for £15 million last summer.

The new stadium will see the current capacity, which is around 28,000, double, and Stansfield has stated how he "can't wait" to be playing in it.

"The noise at St. Andrew's is special. We get 28,000 every week, making unbelievable noise," Stansfield said.

"To think we could have an even bigger stadium with more fans is exciting. I can't wait to walk out in front of everyone in a new ground. It will be great for the city and the community."

Whilst not explicitly said, this implies that the 22-year-old is fully committed to Birmingham for at least the next five years, and maybe even more, which is great news for Blues fans.

Stansfield quickly became a fan favourite during his loan spell with the club in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, and has reaffirmed that since he made a permanent switch the following year.

Perhaps an expressed desire to play in 'The Powerhouse' when it opens in 2030 isn't needed, as Stansfield is set to still be a Birmingham player if the opening date is met. That is, if he doesn't leave before the end of his current contract.

The 22-year-old signed a seven-year deal with the Blues when he signed for the club in 2024, so his deal is actually set to run out at the end of the 2030/31 campaign.

At the start of his final year, Stansfield will only be 28, and in the beginning stage of what many believe to be the traditional 'prime years.'

Whilst Birmingham does have aspirations of being one of the best teams in Europe by the time they move into what will be one of the biggest stadiums in England, sometimes it doesn't all go to plan, and there could be a situation where Stansfield moves on to a club in a better standing than Chris Davies' side.

But that thought clearly isn't in the head of Birmingham's star striker, who seems to be going from strength to strength each year.

If the Blues do end up playing in Europe by the time 2030 rolls around, it'll be likely that Stansfield's goals will have helped them get there, and he's showing no signs of wanting to jump ship anytime soon.
