Touted as one of FC Barcelona's brightest prospects at the start of the 2010s, Jean Marie Dongou has delivered a powerful and unfiltered account of his time in Catalonia. Now 30, the former Cameroonian striker opened up in an interview with El After de Post United.

Arriving in Barcelona in 2008 from Samuel Eto’o’s academy, Dongou quickly impressed with his strength and goal-scoring instincts. At just 18, he broke into the first team during the 2013-2014 season, found the net in a Copa del Rey clash against Cartagena, and even tasted action in La Liga and the Champions League.

But the story didn’t unfold as expected. Hampered by serious knee injuries, Dongou left Barça in 2016, beginning a long journey through various Spanish and foreign clubs before hanging up his boots in April 2023 at just 28. In his testimony, the former striker revealed above all the internal struggles he faced at the club:

In Spain, I suffered more from anti-Catalan sentiment than from racism. I was never a victim of racism.

He also explained that after his promising start, his progress depended on the backing of certain influential figures—support he never received, which ultimately stalled his development.Dongou also reflects on the harsh reality of youth development:

My recruitment? There were 300 kids, and out of those 300, they picked 60. From those 60, the coach selected 12. We came to Barcelona, and Barça only signed three.

Even at a very young age, he bore a heavy family responsibility:

When I arrived, Barcelona paid you a lot of money for being a kid. I was bringing money home from the age of 13. The money Barça gave me was enough to help my parents and my sisters. I started paying for my sisters’ university studies.

Moved, he concludes with powerful words:

Barcelona saved my life and my family’s. If I hadn’t gone to Barça, my parents probably wouldn’t be alive today.

With 29 goals and 9 assists in 132 games for Barça B, Jean Marie Dongou will always be remembered as a promising talent, forever marked by La Masia—even if fate never allowed him to reach the heights once hoped for.
