Jean-Philippe Mateta (28) will not require knee surgery, Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has confirmed, as reported by Sky Sports.
The France international saw a proposed £30m switch to the Serie A side collapse after Milan’s medical team concluded surgery was necessary. Palace, however, maintained a different view, and Glasner revealed that subsequent consultations with multiple specialists have supported that position.
“He doesn’t need surgery,” Glasner said, stressing that the final decision rested with the player. The injury, which Mateta has been managing since November, will still keep him sidelined for an unspecified period, but rehabilitation is now viewed as the preferred route to recovery.
The news offers relief for both club and player. Mateta was left disappointed by the breakdown of his Milan move but now has certainty over his immediate future, with Glasner confirming he will remain at Selhurst Park until at least the summer. That stability is expected to help the forward refocus, particularly with his World Cup ambitions firmly in mind.
Mateta is keen to return swiftly and reclaim his place amid increased competition following Palace’s £48m signing of Jorgen Strand Larsen. While questions remain over his long-term future, Glasner believes the striker’s mindset is clear: recover quickly, contribute decisively, and keep his international hopes alive.
