The federation announced that Jesús Gil Manzano will referee Sunday’s Villarreal v Valencia at La Cerámica, a decision that has not pleased either fanbase, particularly Villarreal’s.
It is his first Villarreal assignment in La Liga this season, though he handled their Copa tie against Ciudad de Lucena. His last Villarreal game was in March 2025, a 1-2 home loss to Real Madrid.
Across Liga and Copa he has overseen Villarreal 33 times, with 13 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats, and a string of flashpoints.
On 26-2-2017 against Real Madrid he sent off Fran Escribá after awarding a handball penalty against Bruno, while a Marcelo appeal was ignored. It ended 2-3.
At Levante on 23-8-2019, from VAR he urged a very strict penalty on Toko Ekambi that Andrés saved, then ordered a retake for the keeper moving off his line by millimetres.
In Bilbao on 1-3-2020 he missed the severity of Capa’s tackle on Cazorla, upheld a handball penalty against Pau despite his hands behind his back, then left a late foul by Unai Núñez on Paco Alcácer unchecked.
On 19-1-2023 against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey he did not give a Militao foul on Morales in minute 85, and from the next counter Ceballos scored for 2-3.
