In a recent interview with RAC1 (h/t SPORT), FC Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia says he hopes Marc-Andre ter Stegen makes the best decision for his future as speculation continues over the German goalkeeper’s possible move to Ajax.

During the chat, the Spanish shot-stopper also discussed his call-up to the Spain squad for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup as well as the Catalans’ pursuit of Julian Alvarez.

On the World Cup experience

Although he has yet to play a minute at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Garcia says he is thoroughly enjoying his first tournament with Spain’s senior national team.

Following an outstanding debut season at Barcelona, during which he won the Zamora Trophy as La Liga’s best goalkeeper, the 25-year-old is embracing his role within Luis de la Fuente’s squad.

“We all know what we have to contribute. De la Fuente hasn’t told me anything specific. Those who play and those who don’t all understand the objective,” he said.

On Ter Stegen and Szczesny

Garcia acknowledged that he has been following the developments surrounding Barcelona, particularly the uncertainty over Ter Stegen’s future.

The German goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a move to Ajax, where former Girona coach Míchel is reportedly eager to reunite with him.

Asked about the situation, Garcia preferred not to speculate, saying: “I don’t know exactly what’s happening.

“If all the parties believe it’s the best solution for him and for the clubs, then I hope the decision is the best one for Marc. That’s the most important thing after two difficult seasons.”

Garcia also highlighted the influence of Wojciech Szczesny during his first season at Barcelona.

According to the young goalkeeper, the experienced Pole has helped him in many areas beyond the tactical side of the game.

“He’s helped me a lot, not only with tactical aspects but also with many other things,” noted Garcia.

Garcia also praised Szczesny’s professionalism and willingness to accept his role despite having spent many years as a first-choice goalkeeper.

“He’s been an important goalkeeper throughout his career, and he’s handled his role this season really well,” he added.

Rather than seeing the competition as a problem, Garcia believes it motivates him.

“It’s a good situation for everyone. Of course he’d like to play, and I see it as competition that pushes me to perform at my highest level,” he further staed.

Gordon can improve Barcelona

Garcia also welcomed Barcelona’s signing of Anthony Gordon, believing the England winger can make a significant impact.

Having faced him previously against Newcastle United, Garcia praised Gordon’s intensity, pressing and decision-making.

“We suffered against him. He’s intense, presses well and makes good decisions with the ball. He can bring a lot to Barça,” he noted.

Careful when discussing Julian Alvarez

While acknowledging the Argentine’s quality, he avoided adding fuel to the speculation.

“Everyone knows he’s a great player, but he’s an Atletico player. There’s very little we can say about what he or the clubs decide. We don’t know whether everything that’s reported is true, so we don’t pay too much attention to it,” he said.

Confident Lamine Yamal Is Ready

Garcia also gave an encouraging update on teammate Lamine Yamal, who has gradually increased his minutes during the World Cup after returning from injury.

He believes the careful approach has been the correct one and expects the Barcelona winger to reach full fitness very soon.

“I think he’s doing well. The steps that have been taken have been the right ones, introducing him gradually so he could build his rhythm,” said Garcia.

“He played the full match the other day and was a little tired, which is completely normal. After these training sessions he has regained his rhythm, and I think we’ll now see him at 100 percent.”
