Last night, Joan Garcia faced his biggest challenge since joining FC Barcelona when he stepped onto the pitch at St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League.

It marked the 24-year-old goalkeeper’s debut in European competition and he was more than up to the challenge, playing his part in Barça’s 2-1 victory over the Magpies.

Indeed, the Barça goalkeeper was key in keeping the match level during the first half, producing a sensational save from a Harvey Barnes shot. He showed great reliability both between the posts and with his distribution.

Happy and excited, says Garcia

Speaking to the media after the win for Barcelona, Garcia admitted that it was exciting to make his Champions League debut and that he was happy with the win.

“It has been very exciting,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. “Happy with the victory,” he added.

“We knew the first few minutes would be important, because they were very pressed. They had that chance, which luckily they were able to take advantage of, and from there we grew. We settled into the game and were able to win,” elaborated Garcia.

The goalkeeper went on to admit that it was challenging to make his debut at a daunting stadium like St. James’ Park, saying: “It was a difficult debut on a pitch like this.”

Talking about the difference between his role at Barcelona and Espanyol, the Spanish shot-stopper remarked: “It’s a totally different style.”

“It’s true that I’m not involved as much in saves or goalkeeping, but I do have to be much more attentive to my footwork and getting behind the defence.

“I’m feeling very comfortable. Little by little, I’m feeling better in that sense, and so far, everything’s going well.”

Praise for Rashford, wait for Spain call-up

Another of the main figures in the victory was Marcus Rashford, who scored twice, and Joan Garcia took the opportunity to praise his performance against Newcastle.

“It was incredible, although we’re used to it in training. To do it in a game like this… The truth is, he has a very good shot. I’m happy for him, he’s working hard and very well. I’m glad he was able to have a game like this,” he noted.

When asked about a potential call-up to the Spanish national team, Garcia responded with humility, saying:

“It doesn’t depend on me. I’ll keep working the same, whether I make it or not.”
