FC Barcelona have always had an eye for young talent. Those who come through La Masia turn out to be success stories more often than not, but external recruitment has been a mixed bag.
Vitor Roque, for example, was a Brazilian talent the Catalan club backed heavily based on potential. However, he could not settle in Spain and returned to his homeland much sooner than expected.
According to Fichajes, club president Joan Laporta now wants to sign talented 17-year-old Mexican prospect Gilberto Mora for Barcelona. His breakout performances have caught the eye of Europe’s elite.
The Catalan club are joined by arch-rivals Real Madrid in the race for the teenager’s signature. Both teams will want bragging rights, much like the saga that saw Los Blancos pip Barcelona to Arda Güler.
Mora has showcased his quality, consistently contributing goals and assists and playing with a maturity beyond his years. A move to Barcelona and development at one of the best facilities in the world would be an excellent bet for the club.
Given the level of interest from top European sides, Mora is likely to command a hefty price tag. If Barcelona were to sign him, he might need a year or two with Barça Atlètic before stepping up to the first team.
Let us wait and see whether Barcelona make a serious effort to sign the Mexican gem in the coming months.
