According to Glorioso 1904, João Diogo Manteigas has criticised Rui Costa’s silence after Frederico Varandas’s recent comments, writing on Instagram that Benfica have waited too long to adopt a firm stance.
The former Benfica presidential candidate argued the approach harms the club’s good name. He also noted that two key domestic games against rivals are approaching. Manteigas has previously filed a disciplinary complaint against André Villas-Boas.
He accused Varandas of airing a private episode without context to draw media attention, calling it convenient for a pressure strategy that distracts with one hand while acting with the other.
Manteigas wrote that, if accurate, Varandas’s account described the Porto president addressing his Benfica counterpart in front of others and equating Apito Dourado, and Apito Final, with the emails case.
He said Benfica’s image, name and honour continue to be attacked, in private and in public, and concluded the board’s response has been inadequate.
