Joao Gomes set for medical ahead of Aston Villa switch | OneFootball

Joao Gomes is expected to undergo a medical on Friday before sealing a £38 million move from Wolves to Aston Villa.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Brazilian left the Championship club's Portugal training camp on Thursday to return to the UK after the clubs agreed a deal.

A summer exit had been likely after Wolves' relegation. Atletico Madrid were long-time favourites, but with interest cooling Villa moved to strengthen midfield after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and losing Amadou Onana to long-term injury.

Gomes has made 130 appearances since joining from Flamengo in 2023. He is seen as an Onana replacement, and Villa plan further business.

The club hope to complete 20-year-old Switzerland international Johan Manzambi's signing from Freiburg later on Friday, and are in talks with Bayern Munich over a possible loan for Joao Palhinha.

Manzambi will become Villa's record buy in a deal exceeding £50m.

Tielemans joined United earlier this week for £35m, while Lucas Digne is on course to join Paris Saint-Germain once he returns from World Cup duty with France.

Former Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan, now at AC Milan, is being targeted as Digne's replacement, with Unai Emery's squad undergoing its biggest summer shake-up since his arrival.

Wolves are also expected to be busy, with a replacement for Gomes a priority. Their summer signings so far are Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez and winger Rafiki Said.
