Joao Gomes to join Villa from Wolves in £38m West Midlands switch | OneFootball

Joao Gomes is leaving Wolves to join Villa in a £38m deal, comfortably the biggest transfer between the two neighbours.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Brazilian has departed Wolves’ training ground in Portugal and will return to the UK ahead of completing the switch. Talks between the clubs quickened in recent days.

Villa turned to Gomes after losing Amadou Onana to a long-term injury, then saw Youri Tielemans move to Manchester United for £38m earlier this week. Atletico Madrid had been strongly linked following Wolves’ relegation, but no agreement was reached.

Discussions have also been held with Bayern Munich over a loan for Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha. Manchester United had been credited with an interest in Gomes, yet Villa made the decisive move.

Gomes, 25, joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and made 130 appearances, with eight goals and six assists. He is due to undergo a medical before signing.

Villa are on course to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in a club-record agreement before the end of the week. Right-back Andres Garcia has joined Getafe on a season-long loan.
