João Neves gave Portugal an early lead with a trademark header against DR Congo in their 2026 World Cup opener on Wednesday.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder marked his first appearance at the tournament with his first goal in it, his eighth of the season for club and country, L'Équipe notes.

The breakthrough arrived in the sixth minute. Meeting a left-wing cross from Neto, the 21-year-old guided a glancing header into the side netting past Lionel Mpasi.
Despite standing at 1.74m, Neves continues to excel in the air and had already scored with his head against Bayern Munich this season.
The goal came during a strong early spell for Portugal.
