London City Lionesses secure first WSL win

There was history made at Goodison Park over the weekend as the London City Lionesses became the first independent women’s team to secure a win in the top flight.

Jocelyn Precheur’s team looked confident away from home in an impressive display to get off the mark.

A double from Isobel Goodwin secured the visitors all three points despite a late Yūka Momiki penalty pulling one back for Everton.

After the win, Precheur admitted that there is still lots of work to be done for his team.

“Even if there are a lot of areas that we need to improve on, today was better than yesterday, better than last week.” He said. “The biggest challenge for us is to adapt to this league.

“We have the capacity to do it, the players are talented enough to adapt, it’s just a matter of time.”

What next for London City Lionesses?

London City Lionesses shot up to ninth in the table following their first win of the campaign. Liverpool and Aston Villa remain below the newly-promoted side after their clash was postponed on Sunday.

“We were more organised defensively; there is more cohesion.” Precheur continued. “The crowd supported brilliant on a Friday, but we stayed organised, and the bench helped us and brought what I expected to the pitch. We need to create a team, not just an XI.”

Next up for London City is a League Cup clash against Championship side Crystal Palace.

Precheur’s team will then look for back to back wins in the WSL with a difficult trip to Manchester City.
