The Pompey boss has caused a stir with one of his post-match talking points
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho was left furious with Southampton winger Tom Fellows in the aftermath of Sunday's goalless draw in the South Coast derby at St Mary's, with his verdict promptly causing a stir on social media.
In what was the first league meeting between Saints and Pompey since April 2012, the contest remained as fierce as ever despite a distinct lack of quality in the final third from both sides, with one major talking point being the injuries sustained by Blues goalkeeper Nico Schmid and left-back Conor Ogilvie, with the duo both having to be substituted in the first half and at half-time respectively.
As well as it being his first taste of the local rivalry, it was also Fellows' first appearance for Will Still's side following his reported £10m switch from fellow Championship outfit, West Bromwich Albion, prior to the recent closure of the summer transfer window.
The winger is normally in the headlines as a result of his stunning technical ability, which led to 14 assists being made in last season's second-tier - ironically the same amount as Pompey ace, Josh Murphy.
However, the 22-year-old didn't exactly endear himself to Mousinho for a first-half flashpoint, with both sets of rival fanbases having their say on the Portsmouth boss' comments afterwards.
Mousinho's post-match comments referred to a collision between the aforementioned Schmid and Ogilvie on 19 minutes.
As Fellows chased a high through ball, the 39-year-old has since claimed that the England youth international intended to injure the Pompey duo, with Schmid being replaced by Ben Killip seven minutes later with a wrist injury, whilst Ogilvie was replaced by Jordan Williams at the break due to a neck issue.
“I thought it was really poor, you’ve got two Portsmouth players travelling at pace towards each other and it’s a small push, but it’s a small push with massive consequences,” Mousinho explained.
“There’s no other explanation for that other than he’s trying to injure our players and he did so successfully, so well done on that," he claimed.
“We’ve ended up with one player in hospital and the other really struggling.
“I knew at the time it was a really poor challenge, there was no need for it.”
Featuring on Sky Sports as part of the live matchday coverage, Andy Hinchcliffe was left questioning why Schmid felt the need to rush off his goal-line in the first place rather than the actions of Fellows, which is the same stance taken by one Southampton supporter in particular.
Despite the two sets of supporters not seeing eye-to-eye on many things in life, one Pompey supporter was of the same opinion.
Another Saints fan was also questioning where Mousinho came to his post-match conclusion that Fellows was the root cause of the circumstances.
Former Championship referee, Andy Davies, also issued a lengthy verdict on the collision, believing that the Pompey head coach may also have a differing opinion when looking at the situation in the coming days.
However, there were some who made the journey across the M27 who were in complete agreement with Mousinho in response to Davies' assessment.
Regardless of the aforementioned flashpoint, it would be Mousinho and his players that were more pleased with the full-time outcome as they withstood plenty of late pressure from the home side after dominating the first half themselves, with Andre Dozzell going closest out of any player for both sides with a stunning early effort that hit the crossbar.
After five games, Portsmouth find themselves in ninth with eight points to their name, whilst Southampton are yet to fully get going under Still, as they sit 15th with six points.
