Manchester City defender John Stones says he is delighted Phil Foden has returned to his old form after his struggles last season.

After winning Player of the Season in the 2023-24 campaign Foden, struggled for form throughout 2024-25, registering just seven goals and two assists in the Premier League. Injuries and limited game time ultimately resulted in him losing his place in the England squad.

This season has started brightly for the 25-year-old, as he and Manchester City look to have put the struggles of last season behind them. The winger scored twice against German side Borussia Dortmund in City’s 4-1 win in the Champions League.

Stones, who has been apart of the City setup since Foden’s debut in November 2017, could not hide his joy at seeing his teammate return to his best form.

“I’m just so pleased for him,” Stones said. “I’m a big fan of Phil, of everything, how he plays the game, how everything just comes so natural to him.

“I’m so pleased that he’s back on the score sheet, back happy, seeing him enjoying his football.  think that’s when you get the best out of him. He’s working hard off the ball as well, which is showing his maturity within his game. I’m so pleased for him.”

With the England squad for the November internationals being announced on Friday, Foden will be looking for a return to the side under manager Thomas Tuchel, who has not selected the 25-year-old since his first Three Lions squad in March.

Stones believes Foden’s form will be giving the German plenty of headaches to deal with.

“I know he wants to be, he’s been a huge part of it. I know that the manager loves him and it’s a privileged place to be.

“We’ve all got a fight to be there and earn the shirt. I think, without a doubt, he’s given him a good headache for selection, whenever that is.”
