Jon Martín is one of the 100 nominees for the Golden Boy award, underlining a fine first season with Real Sociedad's senior side. He will also join Spain's training camp with Sergio Gómez and Turrientes before the squad heads to America for the World Cup.
Diario Vasco reports that the prize is handed out by Tuttosport to the best under-21 in European football and has run since 2003. A successor is being sought to Desiré Doué, the Paris Saint Germain winger who won last year and succeeded Lamine Yamal.
Selection factors include performance, potential, the standard of league and club, and market value. Martín is valued at 20 million euros, with a release clause of 60 million.
The leading contenders named this year include Lamine Yamal again, Zaire-Emery and Cubarsí. If either of the two Barcelona players prevails, the recent pattern would continue, with three of the last five won by Pedri, Gavi and Lamine Yamal.
Marc Bernal also features on the list, along with other Liga players such as Pitarch and Virgili.
Previous Real Sociedad names to appear in recent years while at the club include Zakharyan in 2023, Cho in 2023, Barrenetxea in 2021 and Oyarzabal in 2017. Others made the list before arriving as txuri-urdin, among them Oskarsson in 2024, Luka Sucic in 2022, Take Kubo in 2021 and 2020, Sergio Gómez in 2020 and Guedes in 2015 and 2016.
