As reported by Sunderland Echo, former Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers striker Jon Stead has joined Huddersfield Town’s coaching staff under Drury.

Huddersfield confirmed Drury as their full-time boss after the League One season, and Stead will remain involved having linked up with the first team earlier this year. He had been working at the club following Liam Manning’s appointment in January 2026.

The 43-year-old signed for Sunderland from Blackburn in 2005, making 40 appearances and scoring twice. He netted at Everton in April 2006, then at Southend in August 2006.

After a loan at Derby, he left Sunderland for Sheffield United in January 2007. His career also took in Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Notts County, Harrogate Town and two spells with Huddersfield.

A Terriers academy graduate, he debuted in 2002 and hit 18 goals in 2003-04 before a move to Premier League Blackburn Rovers.

Stead retired in 2021 after more than 700 senior games and 165 goals, then took assistant posts with Hartford Athletic, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Barnsley and Bristol Rovers.

His new role deepens ties to his boyhood club. Former Sunderland man Lynden Gooch remains on the League One side’s books and would work under Stead next season should he stay this summer.
